Dogon
Mali • 2007
Witness the flawless beauty of Dogon Country where I trekked 30 miles through the Bandiagara Escarpment. Characterized by its unique cliff villages, the Dogon people moved to this area around 700 years ago to escape the influx of Islam into West Africa. From Dogon, come north with me to Timbuktu, west Africa's oldest trading post and one-time intellectual and spiritual capital for the propagation of Islam. (Timbuktu is said to have one of the oldest universities in the world!) Both Dogon and Timbuktu are listed in the book "501 Places to see Before you Die," and for great reason, as they are two of the most historic and intriguing regions of West Africa.
